Jimenez Leadership in Action AwardFaculty and staff at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston are urged to nominate a deserving colleague for the fifth annual Michael J. Jimenez Leadership in Action Award by 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4. The award, which will be presented at the 2010 STAR Awards luncheon, honors the memory of the late Mike Jimenez, former vice-president and chief human resources officer. The award offers the individual a $5,000 cash prize and signifies the importance of leadership at our institution. Nominations should describe the nominee's demonstration of the following leadership traits:
Nominations should be sent as a word document in 12 point font and should not exceed six pages. A group may jointly nominate one person, following the same guidelines. EOHS Research Seminar SeriesThe Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences will host a research seminar series featuring, “The Economics of Preventing Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: Why money matters?" presented by Benjamin Amick, Ph.D., professor, Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences, The University of Texas School of Public Health. Diversity Fair 2009The UT School of Public Health Students Association (SPHSA) invites Texas Medical Center students, faculty and staff to celebrate diversity and show off your heritage at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13, at the School of Public Health. Bring your favorite ethnic dish, arts and crafts or quilts for display and participate in a cultural show by singing, dancing, acting or playing a musical instrument. Taste a variety of ethnic foods with a $2 donation to SPHSA. The fair will also provide opportunities to learn a variety of dance styles through workshops. Be sure to dress in your ethnic attire as awards will be given for best dressed and best cultural table. Demystifying the IRB ProcessThe Clinical Trials Research Center will present its third session of “Demystifying the IRB Process,” from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the UT Professional Building, 1100.55. Arlene White-Brisco, IRB will present, “What does the CPHS look for in an informed consent?” This course will focus on the ethical, legal and regulatory consideration of the informed consent process. Suggestions will be given on how to develop a research consent document with an overview of the common deficiencies seen by the IRB in consent development. SEIS Physical Readiness TrainingThe Student Epidemic Intelligence Society (SEIS) will present, “Physical Readiness Training: Promoting health and preparedness for tomorrow’s public health leaders,” at 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, at the Recreational Center’s athletic field (7779 Knight Rd.). Learn about SEIS and Public Health Services’ fitness guidelines and proper technique, walk, jog or run one and a half miles, do push-ups and sit-ups and learn how to set up your own fitness program. The Webber Prize for Student Research is an award for outstanding research by a student. It was established in memory of C. Frank Webber, M.D., former dean of the medical school.
