Rec SportsSummer Sports Camp Summer Sports Camp registration opened April 1. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 7-12. Camp hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., with early drop off available. Sand Volleyball League The Sand Volleyball League is now forming! The four-on-four co-ed league will begin on April 15. Clinical Research Budgeting/ Billing TrainingThe goals of the Clinical Research Budgeting and Billing Compliance Program are to simplify and clarify the clinical research billing processes, ensure full cost recovery of clinical research studies and reduce the risks of inappropriate billing of patients and/or third parties. Surplus Auction & Warehouse ClosingA Surplus Auction has been scheduled for 10 a.m., April 29, at the Operations Center Building (OCB) 1851 Crosspoint, Houston, Texas 77054. Early viewing is available 9 a.m. – noon and 1 – 4 p.m., April 28, and 8 – 10 a.m., April 29. Preview auction items by visiting Auctions in Progress. In order to prepare for the Auction, Capital Assets Management WILL NOT be picking up surplus or accepting equipment deliveries after Friday, April 17. Surplus will be open for UT Houston departments to take out only through Friday, April 10. The Surplus Warehouse will be closed Monday, April 13 through May 5, when the regular schedule will resume. Requests received for Surplus pickups will be scheduled on May 7, on a first come first received basis. McGovern Award Lecture Series for Community Contributions and Activism in Health Promotion, sponsored by the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, in the UT School of Public Health RAS Auditorium. The 2009 award recipient, Meryl Cohen, M.Ed., LCSW, vice president of Education and Counseling, Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas, will present "Promoting Adolescent Sexual Health." Cohen has devoted herself to improving adolescent sexual health and preventing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. McGovern Center for Health, Humanities & the Human Spirit, the Global Health Initiative and S.I.G.H.T-Houston present “Tuberculosis: A Forgotten Epidemic, Now a Growing Global Threat” by Dr. Joanne Carter, executive director, RESULTS, noon – 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, in Medical School Building room 2.006. This presentation and discussion will provide the latest information on the global TB and TB-HIV epidemics, a technical and policy perspective on why a disease that kills nearly two million people each year and is the biggest killer of people with AIDS has been too often ignored, and what can and must be done to reverse this neglect and tackle this killer. Carter will discuss the global epidemic, including the links between TB and poverty, the deadly synergy of TB and HIV/AIDS, the growing threat of drug resistance (including XDR-TB), and the way in which the global epidemic poses a major threat to health domestically. The 2009 recipient, Shiriki Kumanyika, Ph.D., MPH, professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, will present "Childhood obesity: Which children are at highest risk, and why?" UT House Medics Spring Home Repair ProgramUT House Medics is looking for volunteers to participate in the Spring Home Repair Program. There's something for volunteers of all ages to do. Don’t like to work with your hands? Not a problem! We need volunteers to visit with the homeowners, help us work safely, coordinate various tasks and teach our young ones how to paint and beautify a garden. UT House Medics welcomes girl scouts, boy scouts, church groups, volleyball teams and children needing volunteer hours for high school and college. Volunteers are provided with a light breakfast, lunch, a commemorative t-shirt and a heart filled with joy at the end of each work day. The homeowners feel very blessed by our generous gift of time. Pilot Projects Research Training GrantThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Education and Research Center (ERC) at the UT School of Public Health supports short term research pilot projects to enhance occupational and environmental health research in Region 6, which includes the states of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico. Funding is provided through a Pilot Projects Research Training Grant from NIOSH and awards are made competitively. The deadline for submitting the letter of intent is April 20. This letter should include a paragraph describing the objectives of the proposed research and which areas of occupational safety and health it addresses. The requested receipt date for proposals is May 29. Detailed information on the grant application procedures and application forms are available at the NIOSH Pilot Project website. March for BabiesThe UT Health Science Center is supporting the March for Babies Sunday, April 26. Spring Musculoskeletal Orthopaedic Update CourseThe University of Texas Medical School at Houston Department of Orthopaedic Surgery presents the Spring Musculoskeletal Update Course for Primary Care Physicians and Allied Healthcare Professionals, May 1 - 2, in the Memorial Hermann Conference Room, located on the ground floor of the Hermann Pavilion Building. This program will feature faculty from the UT Medical School, renowned for their specialties in orthopaedics, research, rheumatology, peri-operative management, general medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. They will update the healthcare community on the advancements and treatment options available in specialized areas of orthopaedics. D. Anderson's Gynecologic Oncology Department will host the 12th annual Sprint for Life 5K Run and Walk and Sprint for Sprouts Kids' Run, an event dedicated to raising funds for ovarian cancer research and building awareness about the risk factors and symptoms of the disease.
