Dental Services

The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston is currently seeking individuals in need of crowns and bridges to serve as patients for our dental students. All students are closely supervised by fully licensed professors at the Dental Branch. Typical fees are about one-third of the cost normally found in the traditional private practice office.

The only difference is that the procedures performed in an educational setting are not done as swiftly as those in a private dental office. If you are interested in obtaining dental service at a reduced cost please contact Dental.Crowns@uth.tmc.edu.

New Virtual World Working Group

Virtual worlds are computer simulated environments that you typically navigate with an avatar through 3D spaces. Virtual worlds such as Second Life are increasing in popularity in the educational and research sectors because of their flexibility in providing a communication platform, visualizing data, and creating realistic simulations of a variety of things such as procedures and equipment.

We are looking for individuals who are using or interested in the use of virtual worlds in education and/or research. We have formed a working group to share ideas, skills and to grow potential collaborations in virtual world projects. If you are interested, contact Cynthia.L.Phelps@uth.tm.edu.

Travel Agency Contract

Corporate Travel Planners, Inc. (CTP) was selected to be the travel agency for The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston effective for a three (3) year period which began Thursday, Jan. 1.

The University Travel program is a mandatory use program and is documented in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOOP) under Section 2.12 Travel, Item II Travel Process, and Sub-Item "G" Use of University Travel and the Employee Reimbursement Travel Guide. The university's policy requires University Travel (Corporate Travel Planners) to be used for all air transportation including any State of Texas airfares negotiated by the State Travel Management Program (STMP) of the Texas Procurement and Support Services (TPASS) unless a valid exception exists. If a lower airfare of $50 or more (excluding the service fee) is found for the exact itinerary through an outside vendor, contact Diane.E.Collard@uth.tmc.edu, 713-500-8405, for approval prior to ticketing.

Also, a new online booking tool is currently scheduled to be available May, 1, 2009. This new tool will provide travelers and administrators with the dashboard technology to make all travel arrangements from one location. Not only will the on-line booking tool provide some health science center policy edits to ensure compliance, it will assist in reducing travel service fees. Look for more news on the new online booking tool in the coming months!

All travel service fees will remain the same as our previous contract for a four (4) month period. Rates will increase effective May 1, 2009. At that time, travelers will have the option to use the CTP full service or utilize the new online booking tool. A listing of fees can be located at the Expense Reimbursement website http://www.uth.tmc.edu/finance/ert/pdf/ctp.pdf and is being updated on Auxiliary Enterprises, University Travel website http://ae.uth.tmc.edu.

Questions regarding the new contract should be directed to Diane.E.Collard@uth.tmc.edu, 713-500-8405.
