Construction AlertTwo eastbound lanes on Moursund Street between Bertner Avenue and M.D. Anderson Boulevard will be closed 7 p.m.-5 a.m., weekday evenings through Wednesday, May 7, due to the relocation of a water meter at the Texas Children’s Hospital Neurological Research Institute Building. Traffic will be diverted to the north side of Moursund Street, with one lane of traffic flowing east and one lane of traffic flowing west. UT Houston Commencement CeremoniesHundreds of students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston will receive degrees in May during commencement ceremonies hosted by each of the university’s schools. Doctors Orchestra of HoustonThe Doctors Orchestra of Houston‘s closing concert of the 2007- 2008 season, will be 5 p.m., Sunday, May 18, at Wortham Center’s Cullen Hall. New Pre-Employment ChecklistEffective Thursday, May 1, Human Resources enhanced the process for submitting information required for the Pre-Employment processing of new faculty, academic A&P, and student employees, as well as visiting faculty, pre/post doctoral fellows, observers, and volunteers. This change will:
The new process requires departments to input pre-employment information (such as name, title, classification, department, hire date, etc.) directly into the PeopleAdmin applicant tracking system, rather than sending a paper document or e-mail. After a transition period ending Thursday, May 15, pre-employment requests (i.e. Pre-employment checklists) for these classifications will only be accepted online via PeopleAdmin. Texas Ignition FundTake advantage of a funding opportunity from the Office of Technology Management and the University of Texas. The Texas Ignition Fund (TIF), a $2 million UT System grant program sponsored by the Board of Regents, is designed to stimulate commercialization of research discoveries at the 15 UT institutions. For more information refer to the Office of Technology Management Web site. Summer Volunteer OpportunityThe University of Texas Harris County Psychiatric Center is looking for student volunteers. Students, ages 14–18, can volunteer to help with non-unit-based office work, including reception, telephone answering, filing, typing, shredding documents and other clerical work; volunteers also may work with facility services, sorting supplies and performing other non-hazardous tasks. Volunteer, ages 18 or over, can volunteer to do office work or work directly with patients. Patient-related activities include reading to patients, playing games, helping with recreational activities. To volunteer, students must fill out an application available at the Harris County Psychiatric Center Web site. Students also need to provide proof of parental permission and TB skin test within the past 12 months. Student volunteers can receive credit for community service, if required by their school district. HOOP UpdatesThe Student Criminal Background Check policy has been updated in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOOP). The policy has been revised to describe when criminal background checks may be conducted on students. Contact the Office of Academic Affairs with any policy questions. UT House Medics Save the DatesSince April was declared Volunteer Month a few years ago, there are so many worthy volunteer opportunities during that month at UT. Rather than compete with these wonderful projects, we have decided to move the UT House Medics’ spring campaign to the fall beginning this year.
