Construction alert

The reconstruction of Holcombe Boulevard between Fannin Street and Braeswood Boulevard will begin Monday, March 24, and continue to Sunday, May 24, of next year.

The work includes installation of new water lines, reconstruction of pavement on Holcombe Boulevard, upgrade of the storm drainage system, rehabilitation of existing wastewater lines and planting of trees in the medians.

The current Holcombe Boulevard medians will be used for temporary traffic lanes during reconstruction. At least four lanes of traffic will remain open during the construction, with two lanes in each direction. As part of the Phase I Construction, one eastbound lane will be closed on the south side of Holcombe Boulevard for the installation of a new 16-inch water line.

Texas Medical Center will issue future construction announcements as the project develops.

Dress for Success

Each spring, the Committee on the Status of Women hosts a week-long suit drive, this year, March 31-April 4, in support of Dress for Success, an organization which provides one new or gently worn business suit to deserving women entering the workforce. Visitor Access to UCT

Card readers in the Low Rise (Garage) Elevators at the University Center Tower (UCT) were activated on Monday, March 17, to require visitors to the building to check-in with security on the first floor of UCT and make higher floors in UCT less accessible to the general public.

Any visitors, including faculty, staff and students not having a UT Health Science Center at Houston ID badge specifically activated for UCT access, will be able to use the low-rise elevators to access the first floor of UCT and garage floors 1-5 only.

UT Volunteers Needed for MOD March for Babies

The March for Babies (formerly WalkAmerica) is the walk that saves babies!  As the March of Dimes’ biggest fundraiser, the walk supports research and programs to help prevent or treat premature birth, birth defects and other threats to babies’ health. UT Health Science Center helps with this major annual fundraiser.

Interested volunteers: You are invited to attend a one-hour team captains’ meetings on Tuesday, March 18: Noon-1 p.m., Medical School Building , Room B.612.

Dell Child Health Lecture in Austin

William H. Dietz, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will present “What Can We Do to Address the Epidemic of Childhood Obesity?”  1:30-3 p.m., Thursday, April 10, Thompson Conference Center, University of Texas at Austin.

Dietz is this year’s holder of The Michael & Susan Dell Lectureship in Child Health. A reception will immediately follow the lecture. This lecture is sponsored by the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living at The University of Texas School of Public Health, Austin Regional Campus. Rec Center 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament

Registration deadline is today, Tuesday, March 18, to take part in the men’s/women’s 5-on-5 basketball tournament. If the tournament makes, there will be an organizational meeting, 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 19. The Recreation Center has recently added brand new break-away goals waiting for your team to test them! If you think your team has game, come fill out a registration form ASAP, spaces are limited.

Summer Sports Camp

Registration for the Recreation Center Summer Sports Camp for children ages 7-12 opens April 1. Each session is one week long, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday–Friday.  We offer before camp activities at 7:30 a.m. and pick-up,  4:45-5:30 p.m. There are four,  one-week sessions during the summer. Space is limited to 40 campers per session; first-come, first paid basis. You must provide a completed registration form, a copy of his/her birth certificate, and payment by cash or check only. HOMES Clinic Needs Physician Volunteers

The Houston Outreach Medicine, Education, and Social Services (HOMES) clinic provides free, quality healthcare to homeless residents of Houston. As a student-run program, the HOMES clinic offers students real life experience in the health care system and the opportunity to provide medical attention to those in need.

However, the students who staff the HOMES clinic need physician preceptors to assist students with diagnosis and treatment of patients. Physician preceptors are needed to work at the downtown clinic, 1212 Prairie St., near Minute Maid Park, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., two to three Sundays a year.
