The Leader Update

Visitor Access to UCT

Card Readers in the Low Rise (Garage) Elevators at the University Center Tower (UCT) will be activated on Monday, March 17, to require visitors to the building to check-in with security on the first floor of UCT and make higher floors in UCT less accessible to the general public.

Any visitors, including faculty, staff and students not having a UT Health Science Center at Houston ID badge specifically activated for UCT access, will be able to use the low-rise elevators to access Garage floors 1-5 only.

UT Healthcare Management Center in the Works

The University of Texas School of Public Health will announce the creation of a center that will offer advanced training in healthcare management 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, in the school’s auditorium, 1200 Herman Pressler.

The event, “Bridging the Divide: From Institutional Health to Community Well-Being — A Reflection on Houston's Health Care over the Past 20 Years,”will feature a panel of distinguished speakers including Michael Jhin, former CEO of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, Larry Mathis, former CEO of The Methodist Hospital System; and Dan S. Wilford, former CEO of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. Richard E. Wainerdi, Ph.D., president, CEO and COO of the Texas Medical Center since 1984, will introduce the panelists.

The center announcement, panel discussion and lunch buffet will be hosted by Guy S. Parcel, Ph.D., dean of the UT School of Public Health, and Osama Mikhail, Ph.D., director of the Center for Healthcare Management and senior vice president for strategic planning at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Leaders Need Oxygen

Sarah Weddington, the first recipient of the CSW Distinguished Professional Woman Award, will   present "Leaders Need Oxygen," 3-5 p.m., Thursday, March 27, at the School of Nursing auditorium. The event is hosted by the Committee on the Status of Women and co-sponsored by the Academic & Administrative Leadership Development Program, Auxiliary Enterprises and UT Counseling and WorkLife Services. UT Volunteers Needed for MOD Walk for Babies

The March for Babies (formerly WalkAmerica) is the walk that saves babies!  As the March of Dimes’ biggest fundraiser, the walk supports research and programs to help prevent or treat premature birth, birth defects and other threats to babies’ health. UT Health Science Center helps with this major annual fundraiser.

Interested volunteers: You are invited to attend one of several one-hour team captains’ meetings:

McGovern Award Lecture

Ray Hill, 2008 award recipient and creator/host/producer of Ray Hill’s The Prison Show broadcast weekly on Houston Pacifica Radio station KPFT, 90.1., will present “When Public Health Issues Escape Prison,” noon-1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, at the School of Public Health auditorium. The first John P. McGovern Award Lecture Series for Community Contributions and Activism in Health Promotion lecture is sponsored by the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research. Parking is available in TMC Garage 2. Lunch will be provided for the first 100 attendees. Contact: Peggy Tate, 713-500-9609.

Digital Discovery 2008

Digital Discovery 2008: Issues in Scholarly Communication, a conference jointly organized by the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library, and Fondren Library, Rice University , invites proposals for the conference poster session to be held on Thursday, March 27, at The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston. Submit your poster proposal, including title and a 250 word abstract, via email to: dkolah@rice.edu.

Poster session proposals should focus on a scholarly communication issue, such as open access, Web2.0 publishing innovations, integrating data archives into publishing, or institutional respositories. Poster sessions may document a current practice or forecast an innovation in scholarly communications. The deadline for poster session submissions is Monday, March 10. Notification of applicants: by Monday, March 17.

Conference speakers include Charles Bailey, publisher of Digital Scholarship and Richard Baraniuk, founder of Connexions, as well as speakers on bibliometrics and the effect of Web2.0 on publishing. Visit Digital Discovery website for more information on the conference.

Stroke Survivor Conference

The Center on Aging at the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing at Houston and the CAReS Research Study staff will host the 2008 Stroke Survivor Conference, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 12, at Memorial Hermann/Houston Baptist University Wellness Center, 7731 Southwest Freeway.

The conference, “Surviving Stroke: Nurturing Hope and Health,” will feature stroke and wellness experts, a vendor hall, and sessions featuring information about Tai Chi, floor exercise, pool exercise, nutrition, spirituality, mindfulness and strategies for dealing with low vision in stroke survivors.

Dr. Stanley Fisher, co-director of the Movement Disorders and Rehabilitation Clinic at Methodist Neurological Institute, will discuss advances in stroke recovery. Dr. Lynda A. Cleveland, a lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin, will tell her personal story of surviving traumatic brain injury. Stroke survivor Jaime Garza and spouse Kathleen Garza will give a lunchtime presentation titled “Stroke: The Quantum Leap of Faith.”

The conference is intended for stroke survivors, their family members, professionals and experts involved in stroke survival and anyone wanting more information about the prevention, signs, symptoms and treatment of stroke.
