The Leader Update

Classified Information update

  • The University Classified Staff Council (UCSC) needs motivated, hard-working classified staff to join as full members. UCSC is recruiting classified employees to join the UCSC to fill vacancies in the Medical School, School of Health Information Sciences, Dental Branch and General Administration. UCSC bylaws require members to be full-time classified employees who have fulfilled the obligations of their probationary employment period. If you would like to be a UCSC representative, would like to nominate someone else or just need more information, contact Diane.D.Brooks@uth.tmc.edu, 713-500-8457. Nominations are due by the close of business Feb. 28. Separate elections will be held at the four sites during the week of March 3-7.
  • The 13th Annual University Classified Staff Workshop presented by the University Classified Staff Council — “Creating Waves of Success: Finding Seashells Along the Way" — will take place Monday, May 12, at the San Luis Conference Center in Galveston.   • Are you a classified employee with a son or a daughter who is a senior in high school, entering college in the coming year? Have we got news for you! Applications are now being accepted for scholarships, sponsored by the University Classified Staff Council, awarded exclusively to children of classified employees. Completed applications must be received by the close of business, Friday, March 14. Weight Watchers series

The first session of the new spring Weight Watchers 12-week series begins at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, School of Nursing, Room 360. Click for Children’s Memorial Hermann

The Med/Peds and Pediatric residents at the Medical School ask that you help Children’s Memorial Hermann win a fun room build-out from Colgate. Some of the pediatric patients spend more time admitted to the hospital than they do at home. The company will build the fun room for whichever children's hospital has the most click votes at http://www.colgate.com/app/Colgate/US/Corp/CommunityPrograms/show-the-love.cvsp by Feb. 29. You can vote once a day, every day, but you may have to do this from your home computer, as the Web site recognizes the IP address of the computer you vote from, and might let only one person vote from that school or site.

Clinical Research Practice

  • A Nursing Education Program in Clinical Research: A Model of Safe and Ethical Research Practice for Clinicians, beginning March 25, provides a model of practice in conducting clinical research based on the principles of Good Clinical Practice; focusing on research compliance, protecting the safety and well-being of research subjects and ensuring the integrity of the research. Topics will include: research ethics, consent process, budget development and more. Pre-registration is required. This course is free for health science center employees and $300 per person for participants from outside agencies.

Free movie night

Join the faculty and staff of the School of Public Health Global Health Concentration for "A Paralyzing Fear: The story of Polio in America," a 90-minute documentary film by Nina Gilden Seavey, 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, School of Public Health Building, Room E-705.

The story of polio's rise to epidemic proportions in 1916 and its eventual eradication through vaccines in the 1950s, the documentary examines America's haunting fear of the disease it could not contain and tells the story of America's transcendence from that fear. The film crew traveled across America interviewing polio survivors, parents, doctors, physical therapists, journalists and everyday citizens who have been affected by the disease. Featuring thousands of photographs and films from the March of Dimes' archives, the documentary presents authentic images from the American polio era which had been in storage for more than 35 years.

A Robert Half poll of 1,800 Human Resources and finance professionals in 11 countries found that recent graduates were “particularly driven” by the desire for work-life balance. They wanted flexible work hours and clear career development programs, and were looking for “employment opportunities that complemented their lifestyles...”
