U.S. Public Health Service officers
to be honored by UT Dean

HOUSTON – (April 9, 2009) – Roberta Ness, M.D., M.P.H., dean of The University of Texas School of Public Health, will host a reception to honor Houston and Galveston area uniformed United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officers at an April 14 reception at the UT School of Public Health in Houston. For more than 200 years, corps officers, including the U.S. Surgeon General, have served as public health professionals dedicated to delivering the nation’s public health promotion and disease prevention programs and advancing public health science.

The corps, whose officers include physicians, pharmacists, environmental health officers and scientists/researchers, have been at the frontline against the spread of disease, from sailors returning from foreign ports to immigrants entering the country to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters.

The reception will allow officers and UT School of Public Health students and faculty members to share their thoughts and ideas in order to establish a relationship for future internship, education and research opportunities.
