Ferrari to discuss biomedical nanotechnology at Sept. 26 lecture

HOUSTON – (Sept. 7, 2007) – Mauro Ferrari, Ph.D., one of the founders of the field of biomedical nanotechnology, will be the featured speaker Sept. 26 at the Inaugural Science Teachers Symposia hosted by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston’s Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 5-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Keck Hall, Room 102, at Rice University, 6100 Main.

Ferrari is professor and director of nanotechnology at The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases and chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston.

Nanotechnology is the science of using tiny particles–the width of a human hair is about 80,000 nanometers–to identify and treat diseases such as cancer in the very early stages way before conventional means such as imaging can detect a problem.

Ferrari has been awarded $26 million in grant funding since 1990 and spent two years as eminent scholar and special expert on nanotechnology for the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Devices that can provide breakthroughs in the fight against cancer, including nanovectors, nanowires and nanocantilevers, will be described during the lecture.

Seating is limited. To reserve a place, call 713-500-9274 or email Nancy.Benedict@uth.tmc.edu. One hour of Continuing Professional Education will be offered.
