Commencements Announced
for UT Health Science Center's Six Schools

 

HOUSTON–(April 4, 2006)–Distinguished speakers will address faculty, staff, students and guests when the six professional schools of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston hold their 2006 graduation ceremonies. Detailed information for each commencement event is below:

UT School of Health Information Sciences at Houston:
4 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2006
Auditorium, UT School of Nursing, 6901 Bertner

Featured speaker will be: James A. Yorke, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Physics, Institute for Physical Sciences and Technology, University of Maryland.  Yorke is best known to the general public for coining the mathematical term “chaos,” and has co-authored three books on chaos theory.  ("Chaos" is a mathematical concept in non-linear dynamics for systems that vary according to precise deterministic laws but appear to behave in random fashion.)

UT School of Public Health at Houston:
2 p.m., Friday May 5, 2006
Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 W. Holcombe

Commencement Speaker is Julie Gerberding, M.D., director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

UT School of Nursing at Houston:
7 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2006
George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas

Principal speaker will be Maria Warda, Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing at Georgia Southwestern State University.

UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston:
10 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2006
Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 West Holcombe

Principal speaker will be Kenneth Shine, M.D., executive vice chancellor for health affairs at The University of Texas System. He is chair of the Food and Drug Administration’s Scientific Advisory Committee and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Department of Homeland Security.

UT Dental Branch at Houston:
6 p.m., Friday, May 19, 2006
Cullen Performance Hall on the University of Houston campus

Speaker will be Stephen Schwartz, D.D.S., Second Vice President of the American Dental Association and a noted Houston endodontist.  He also is a graduate of UT Dental Branch and a past president of the Greater Houston Dental Society and Texas Dental Association.

UT Medical School at Houston:
10 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006
General Assembly Hall, George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas

More than 200 students are expected to receive their medical degrees. Principal speaker will be: Kenneth Shine, M.D., executive vice chancellor for health affairs at The University of Texas System.  Shine has decades of experience working with international health experts on global issues such as emerging infectious illnesses, bioethics and access of care. He is the former president of the Institute of Medicine and founding director of the RAND Center for Domestic and International Health Security.  A cardiologist and physiologist, Shine is Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles, David Geffen School of Medicine, where he served as Dean and Provost for Medical Science from 1986-1992.

The UT Health Science Center at Houston, founded in 1972, is a health institution of The University of Texas System. It is a state-supported institution whose state funding is supplemented by competitive research grants, patient fees and private philanthropy.
