Getting Ready for UTHSC Research Day

“Complex Determinants in Health: Interactions of Genetic Factors and Environmental Influences” is the focus of this years UT Health Science Center Research Day, scheduled for Friday, November 21, at the Fayez S. Sarofim Building of the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases. The program is designed to explore new discoveries in the area of Genes – Environment Interactions.

A Faculty Seminar and Student and Postdoc Poster Presentations will be a part of the event.

For this year’s program we have chosen a topic that encompasses many of the exciting areas of research being pursued by the faculty students and staff of our six UTHSC-H Schools and our research institutes and centers. I hope that researchers, particularly students and fellows, interested in presenting their research at Research Day will start planning their presentations now since the deadlines for registration and the submission of abstracts is fast approaching., says Peter J. Davies, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president for Research.

In addition, Davies encourages all of faculty, students and staff to take time to come listen to the platform presentations and view the many posters that will be on display.

Student Participation
Six student awards:  First Prize - $400; Second Prize - $300; Third Prize - $200 will be presented to the first author of the top three posters in each of two areas — clinical/ translational and basic science — that demonstrate innovative research.

All students enrolled at the health science center are eligible to submit an abstract for the poster session. Students may submit only one abstract as first author in either of the research categories.

Students can register online between Friday, August 1, and Sunday, August 31, submitting abstracts to https://oac9.uth.tmc.edu/jsp/ResearchForum. A panel of judges will review the abstracts and the top 50 will be selected for poster presentations. Students will be notified no later than Sept. 15, if their abstract is chosen.

Postdoctoral Fellow Participation
Two postdoctoral fellow awards will be given:

  • One $400 award to the first author on the top poster demonstrating innovative research in clinical/translational research; and
  • One $400 award to the first author on the top poster demonstrating innovative research in basic science research.

All UT Health Science Center postdoctoral fellows are eligible to submit an abstract for the poster session. Fellows may also submit abstracts to https://oac9.uth.tmc.edu/jsp/ResearchForum from Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 31. Postdocs may submit only one abstract as first author.

John “Jack” Byrne, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Medical School department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, will assemble a group of judges who will review all abstracts and select the top 25 abstracts for poster presentations. Those selected to participate will be notified by Monday Sept. 15, 2008.

Abstract guidelines
300-word maximum; Arial 10-point font saved as .RTF (Rich Text Format); no larger than 1MB; board size:  8 feet wide by 4 feet tall (Velcro will be provided).
Students and postdocs may put up their poster in the atrium of the Fayez S. Sarofim Building, home of The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases, 8-9 a.m., Friday, November 21, and are requested to attend the Faculty Symposium beginning at 9 a.m. in the auditorium. The poster session is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. with prizes being awarded at the close of the session.
