Brochures and Reports
To
economize on printing costs (and related costs for envelopes and mailing),
brochures and reports should be printed in conventional sizes with vertical
design. Recommended sizes are: 4” x 9” and 5 1/2” x
8.1/2” and 7” x 10” and 81/2” x 11”.
All cover designs for brochures, invitations and collateral
reports should reflect the following formula for consistency:
• Clear meaningful title or headline at the top (either centered or flush
left).
• Proper university or school logo at the bottom (centered or flush left,
same as title).
• Photography, artwork, additional information or nothing in the middle
section.

Remember that “less is more” in creating
graphic designs that communicate to a targeted audience. One compelling,
relevant photo or graphic properly sized has more impact than a collage
of small photos.
Newsletters, Posters and Fliers
The graphic design of
posters and fliers should follow the formula recommended for brochure
covers. Use a large, meaningful title or headline at the top and a proper
school or university logo at the bottom – either both centered
or both flush left. The middle of the poster or flier should feature
relevant artwork and detailed information, such as the date/time/place
of an event and/or a contact number or Web site for more information.
The university’s
recommended typefaces should
be used for poster and flier design.
Newsletters should feature the proper school or university
logotype at the bottom of the front page, large enough to be clearly
visible, and with no “encroaching” copy or artwork. The name
of the publication is featured in the masthead; no other graphic symbols
or artwork should be incorporated into the name of the publication. For
clarity, the audience or purpose of the newsletter should be spelled
out as part of the masthead, along with the publication date and/or issue
number. For example, “A newsletter for alumni of the UT Dental
Branch at Houston, Issue No. 3, Summer 2004.”
