PARTNERS Professorship Awarded to Hickey

Second PARTNERS Endowment Renamed for UT School of Nursing Dean Starck

Professor of Nursing Joanne V. Hickey, Ph.D., has been awarded the second endowed professorship in nursing from PARTNERS, a community support group for The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston.

Hickey received the award in September at the school’s 35th anniversary celebration, where it was announced that the professorship has been named the Patricia L. Starck/PARTNERS Endowed Professorship in Nursing.

Starck, who holds the John P. McGovern, M.D., Distinguished Professorship in Nursing, has been the dean of the nursing school since 1984.

Hickey, assistant dean and chair of the Department of Acute and Continuing Care, coordinates the school’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program. Her research has focused on preparing family caregivers for recovery from stroke, cardiovascular markers related to recurrent stroke and palliative care issues with neuroscience patients. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the American Academy of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Critical Care Medicine.

“I am extremely flattered that PARTNERS would name this professorship for me, and I couldn’t be more pleased with having Dr. Hickey named as the recipient,” Starck said. “She is the ideal professor – a scholar in every way; a well respected academician and a highly regarded practitioner and researcher. She has superb leadership skills within the school’s administrative team and is a national leader within the profession.”

Thomas A. Mackey, Ph.D., associate dean for practice, was the first recipient of the PARTNERS Endowed Professorship in Nursing.

Since 1994, PARTNERS has raised its student scholarship endowment to more than $1 million. It has funded 71 full-tuition scholarships and 31 faculty research projects to date.
