14th Annual Golf Tournament Yields 29 Scholarships
More than 100 golfers play to support future health and science professionals
Twenty-nine students from all six schools of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston have received scholarships as a result of the 14th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament.

The scholarships, which were awarded in December, totaled $42,400. Since its inception, the tournament has awarded 310 scholarships totaling $363,205.
“We extend our utmost appreciation for the past and present support of all of our contributors,” said David Mercer, M.D., who chaired the tournament. Mercer is the James “Red” Duke Distinguished Professor in Surgery at the UT Medical School at Houston.
Some 128 golfers played in the Sept. 25 tournament, held for the second time at Timber Creek Golf Club. Honorary chair for the event was Frank Moody, M.D., professor of surgery.
Mercer expressed special thanks to Carrabba’s Italian Grill for providing dinner for the golfers and to event coordinator Rose Mary Betancourt-Trevino and her committee for all of their efforts. Betancourt- Trevino is senior coordinator of special programs, Office of Institutional Advancement.
Members of the committee were Araceli Alvarez, student financial aid officer III; Pauline Habetz, director of recreational and intramural programs, Auxiliary Enterprises; Devin Longuet, J.D., legal officer, Legal Affairs and Institutional Compliance; and Michael Williams, manager of copy services, Auxiliary Enterprises.
