Yeh Elected to Republic of China’s Top Science Society

 

Edward T. H. Yeh, M.D., director of the Research Center for Cardiovascular Diseases at the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases, has been elected to membership in the Academia Sinica, the most prestigious scholarly institution in the Republic of China.

Yeh is among 15 new members of the academy elected this year. He is professor and chair of the Department of Cardiology at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and a faculty member in the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston. He also is a member of the Texas Heart Institute. The Academia Sinica was founded in 1928 in Nanking, China, and consists of 21 research institutes and six research centers.

The Academia Sinica has two missions: to conduct scientific research and to raise academic standards in Taiwan. The organization currently has 238 academicians, including six Nobel laureates.

Yeh is being honored by the academy for his ground-breaking research, including the discovery of three novel biochemical pathways that revolutionized the understanding of cell cycle progression, cell signaling and the pathogenesis of leukemia. He also is internationally recognized for his research contributions in deciphering the role of inflammation in the development of atherosclerosis and using stem cells to repair damaged heart muscles.

Yeh is a member of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He serves on the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate board of directors and chairs the grant review panel for the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan. He is past president of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists of America, Texas Chapter, and the American Heart Association Houston Chapter.

He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award, University of California-Davis Medical School and the Outstanding Advocate Award from the American Heart Association. He has served on grant review panels at the National University of Singapore and the Vietnam Educational Foundation.

Yeh trained as an immunologist under Nobel laureate Baruj Benacerraf, M.D., at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and nuclear cardiology.
