Honored
as Living Legends
Three physicians of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston have been honored as Living Legends by the 16th World Congress of the World Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons.
James T. Willerson, M.D., Denton A. Cooley, M.D., and O. Howard “Bud” Frazier, M.D., were three of 10 physicians to receive the award this year, in honor of their major contributions to humanity through invention or discovery and their service as mentors to other scientists.
Willerson is president of the UT Health Science Center and also president-elect and medical director of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.
Cooley and Frazier are clinical professors of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the UT Medical School at Houston. Cooley is president and surgeon-inchief of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s, where Frazier is chief of cardiopulmonary transplantation and director of surgical research.
At the World Congress Aug. 17-20 in Ottawa, Canada, the Living Legends were recognized for contributing greatly to major scientific and technological advances through their work, teaching and leadership.
As an invited speaker, Willerson spoke on “Cellular Therapy for the Heart – A Cardiologist’s Point of View” at a plenary session he chaired on “Cell Based Therapies: Tissue Engineering, Cell Implantation and Gene Therapy.”
Frazier spoke at a session on “Clinical Advances with Mechanical Circulatory Devices.”
