Awards and Honors

Peter Christie, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, Medical School (MS) and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS), has been named an editor for the Journal of Bacteriology, a publication of the American Society for Microbiology.

R. Sue Day, Ph.D., associate dean for research, School of Public Health (SPH), received the 2006 Distinguished Alumna Award from Texas Tech University College of Human Sciences. The award was presented March 6 at the annual awards luncheon. Day was recognized as an important role model for the students and an outstanding representative of the college.

Lu-Yu Hwang, M.D., associate professor of epidemiology, Center for Infectious Diseases, SPH and GSBS, was chosen as a member of the charter class of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), Society of Fellows and Scholars. The first meeting was Feb. 27 at the National Institutes of Health. The new Society of Fellows and Scholars is a multidisciplinary team of nationally known and widely respected senior scientists, educators, academic and societal leaders, and policy experts who will assist the NCMHD’s efforts to reduce and, ultimately, eliminate health disparities as they affect racial and ethnic communities and medically underserved individuals.

Janet Meininger, Ph.D., the Lee and Joseph Jamail Distinguished Professor in the School of Nursing, has been elected a Fellow in the Society of Behavioral Medicine. The Society of Behavioral Medicine brings together multidisciplinary perspectives of health care professionals.

Parsa Mirhaji, M.D., director, Center for Biosecurity and Public Heath Informatics Research, School of Health Information Sciences, has been selected as one of 11 members of the Technology Subcommittee of the Health Information Technology Advisory Committee for the State of Texas Department of Health Services. Their task is to produce guidelines and advisories for the adoption, implementation, evaluation and improvement of health information technology throughout the state.

Samuel Kaplan, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, MS and GSBS, spoke on “Post-Genomic Studies in the Facultative Photosynthetic Bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1” at the first U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute user’s meeting March 29-April 1 in Walnut Creek, Calif. This is an international gathering of researchers who share an interest in sequence-based science.

Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., director, Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases, and professor, integrative biology and pharmacology, MS and GSBS, recently delivered a series of seven lectures in medical schools, universities, high schools, and public venues in Taiwan and Singapore. The lectures were on nitric oxide research and clinical applications, the Nobel Prize process, and scientific research and education for aspiring young scientists.
