Educator Named Teaching-Learning Keynote Speaker

“Story-telling, Emotion and Media in Technology-based Health Science Education” will be the topic for the keynote speech at the Advances in Teaching and Learning Regional Conference Thursday, May 18, at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

This year’s event 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the School of Nursing and Student Community Center is the seventh annual conference fostering professional excellence in education in the health sciences.

The keynote speaker will be Joseph V. Henderson, M.D., professor of community and family medicine and director of the Interactive Media Laboratory at Dartmouth Medical School. Henderson has used a Virtual Practicum in developing many technology-based learning programs for students, health professionals and patients. With funding through the Department of Homeland Security, his team currently is developing a Virtual Terrorism Response Academy for first responders in law enforcement, fire service and Emergency Medical Services.

The conference program will include hands-on learning workshops, as well as poster and podium presentations. Awards for outstanding poster and podium presentations will be presented at a 4 p.m. wine and cheese reception.

The conference is organized by a health science center-wide committee led by Cynthia Phelps, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UT School of Health Information Sciences at Houston. Sponsors are the UT Health Science Center Office of Academic Affairs; School of Health Information Sciences; School of Nursing; Blackboard, provider of e-education software applications and services; and Your Doctor Program, concierge level primary and preventive care.
