Reaching Out with Books

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison reads to children at Dyess Air Force Base, as Reach Out and Read-Texas establishes its first program for children on a military base. Since 1995, Reach Out and Read- Texas has been under the direction of Susan Cooley King, Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Reach Out and Read is a national program that champions early literacy in children by working with pediatricians to encourage reading in their young patients. The program trains doctors and nurses to advise parents on the importance of reading aloud and gives new books to children at pediatric checkups from the age of 6 months to 5 years. Reach Out and Read serves more than 200,000 children annually throughout Texas, with more than 250,000 books given to families each year. The Rio Grande Valley Partnership Foundation recently joined the effort through a “Reading is Everybody’s Business” project. Resources are provided by in-kind and monetary donations, such as recent gifts of $25,000 each from Half Price Books, Target Stores and Verizon Foundation.
