Awards and Honors

Jerry Bouquot, D.D.S., chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, Dental Branch (DB), was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology in April. Bouquot is only the second non-Canadian to be invited to be a member of that organization.

Gary Frey, D.D.S., assistant professor of restorative dentistry, DB, received the 2006 Dr. Burton Kunik Award from the Greater Houston Dental Society at the Star of the South Dental Meeting April 20-21 for his years of dedicated volunteer service.

Ellen Goss-Shohet, instructor in nursing, School of Nursing (SON), and Julie Lindenberg, assistant professor, SON, were selected to receive scholarships to attend a five-day Faculty Training Program May 22-26 at the UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. The Nurse Oncology Education Program sponsors this program to update undergraduate nursing faculty’s knowledge and clinical skills in cancer nursing.

Carlos R. Hamilton Jr., M.D., executive vice president for external affairs, UT Health Science Center, is the new board chair at The John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science.

Harold Henson, assistant professor of periodontics, DB, was honored at the 83rd American Dental Education Association annual session for his service as president of the Supreme Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha, the national dental hygiene honor society. Henson has served the honor society at the national level for the past three years and is currently immediate past president. During his tenure, Henson was awarded the first ADEA/Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship, named for a past president of ADEA, who was actively involved in dental hygiene education, scholarship and public service.

John Reveille, M.D., professor of internal medicine-rheumatology, Medical School (MS) and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS), co-chaired an international conference March 30-31 on the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Md., The conference on “Spondyloarthritis 2006: The Unmet Needs” was co-sponsored by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and the Spondylitis Association of America.

Presentations

David Eagleman, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomy, MS and GSBS, was featured in an April 2006 Discover Magazine article on “The Future of Time” for his research on human time perception. He also holds appointments in the Institute for Neuroscience and Psychology Department at UT Austin and the Department of Psychology at Rice University.

Millicent Goldschmidt, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, MS and GSBS, and professor of periodontics, DB, spoke in May at the International Symposium on Salmonella and Salmonellosis in Saint Malo, France, on “Review of Biosensor, Microarray and Nanotechnologies Used in the Detection and Identification of Salmonellae.”

Samuel Kaplan, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, MS and GSBS, was a featured speaker May 8 at the annual Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library Conference. Kaplan spoke on “Digital Preservation of Journal Literature at the National Library of Medicine.” He is chair of the Advisory Group for PubMed Central, the National Institutes of Health free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.

Susan Landry, Ph.D., the Michael Matthew Knight Professor; chief, Division of Developmental Pediatrics, MS; and director, Children’s Learning Institute, spoke on “Long-term Outcomes of Preterm Birth” April 20 during the March of Dimes 11th Annual Visiting Professorship in Nursing on “Obstetric, Neonatal and Pediatric Care: A Spectrum of Life Giving Solutions,” presented at the UT School of Nursing at Houston and video cast to sites in Beaumont and Galveston.

Deborah A. Pearson, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, MS and GSBS, spoke March 23 on mental health issues in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities at a celebration sponsored by The Arc of Greater Houston in recognition of Mental Retardation Awareness Month.

Rebecca Polzer, assistant professor, target populations, SON, and Ellen Goss-Shohet , instructor in nursing, SON, spoke March 25 to the Brazoria County Foster Parents Association in Angleton on “Psychotropic Medications in Children and Adolescents.”

Kishore Shetty, D.D.S., director of the Medically Complex Patient Clinic and associate professor of restorative dentistry, gave a plenary lecture March 24 on “Emerging Issues in the Oral Health Care of HIV Positive Patients” at the 22nd Annual Symposium on Oral Health and HIV in Boston.

Publications

Colleen Brand, instructor in nursing for target populations, SON, is author of “Part I: Recognizing Neonatal Spinal Cord Injury,” published in Advances in Neonatal Care. The article reviews development of the spinal column, mechanisms of injury in newborns, signs and symptoms of injury, and information about diagnosis and implications for nursing, prognosis and research.

Barbara R. Foorman, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics, MS, and director of the Center for Academic and Reading Skills, is one of the authors of “How Should Reading be Taught?” published March 22 in “The Child’s Mind,” an online issue of Scientific American. Foorman is commissioner of the National Center for Education Research, a part of the U.S. Department of Education.

Linda Nieman, Ph.D., professor and vice chairman of family and community medicine, MS; Lee Cheng, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine, MS; Mark Hormann, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, MS; Mark Farnie, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine and residency training director, MS; Donald A. Molony, M.D., professor of internal medicine, MS; and Patricia Butler, M.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and associate dean for education programs, MS, are authors of “The Impact of Preclinical Preceptorships on Learning the Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine and Physical Diagnosis Skills,” published in the April issue of Academic Medicine.

Lorraine Frazier, D.S.N., associate professor of nursing systems, SON, and director of TexGen; Marlene Z. Cohen, Ph.D., the John S. Dunn Sr. Distinguished Professor in Oncology Nursing and chair of the Department of Target Populations, SON, and director of applied nursing research at the UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; Amy Calvin, Ph.D., assistant professor, SON, and palliative care nurse researcher, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital; and a genetic counselor in the United Kingdom are authors of “A Legacy for the Children – Attitudes of Older Adults in the United Kingdom to Genetic Testing,” published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing.

Diane Wind Wardell, Ph.D., and Joan C. Engebretson, Dr.P.H., associate professors, SON, are authors of “Taxonomy of Spiritual Experiences” published in the April issue of Journal of Religion and Health.
