While construction of a new home took more than five years of fund raising and some 10 years of planning, the consensus among faculty and staff of the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases (IMM) is that the Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building was worth the wait.
“It’s wonderful,” Ruby McFarland, senior support specialist, said while unpacking a box of supplies at her new workstation and pausing to gaze out the secondstory window. “At last, we have a view!” McFarland’s previous workspace, as well as that of many other IMM faculty and staff, was within the Texas A&M University Institute of Biosciences and Technology building on Holcombe Boulevard.
The move was not without its fair share of bumps along the road. While faculty and staff were unpacking boxes, contracting crews were still hard at work putting the finishing touches on the building, while technical personnel were busy setting up computers.
“It’s like moving into a new house,” commented Thomas Caskey, M.D., IMM chief operating officer, director- and CEO-elect. “Not everything works the first day. I’m sure it will all be working smoothly before long.”
