Another guest speaker, U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, encouraged the audience to internalize the problem and work on solutions.“This meeting should be a violent lightning rod for those who have been complacent and comfortable,” she said. “There are communities in Houston that have the same HIV rates as sub-Saharan Africa – one in three.”

The event was hosted by the School of Public Health, the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs L. Maximilian Buja, M.D., and the Committee on the Status of Women at the UT Health Science Center at Houston.
