Federation of Women’s Clubs Endows Scholarship

Andrea Lafont, center, is the first recipient of the City Federation of Women’s Clubs Endowed Scholarship at The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston (GSBS). In appreciation for their support, she presented yellow roses to federation members Fadine Roquemore Jackson, left, and Joyce Nagle.
The $50,000 federation endowment funds the award of a $2,000 scholarship each year. Lafont received the scholarship for her research into aortic aneurysms. An aneurysm is a bulging of the aorta – the body’s main artery – that leads to a life-threatening rupture in the artery wall. Lafont’s mentor is Dianna Milewicz, M.D., Ph.D., director of medical genetics at the UT Medical School at Houston and holder of the President George Bush Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine.
The City Federation of Women’s Clubs, founded in 1914 as an affiliation of 29 women’s social groups, used proceeds from the recent sale of its building to give financial support to worthwhile causes in Houston, including GSBS.
