Awards and Honors
Lu Ann Aday, Ph.D., the Lorne D. Bain Distinguished Professor in Public Health and Medicine, School of Public Health (SPH), was recognized as one of 19 nominees for the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH)/Pfizer Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was presented at ASPH’s annual reception, held in conjunction with the American Public Health Association’s in Philadelphia. The award is intended to recognize graduate public health faculty from full ASPH-member, accredited schools of public health. The schools have a combined faculty of more than 7,500.
Marianne Marcus, Ed.D., the John P. McGovern Professor in Addiction Nursing and director, Center for Substance Abuse Education, Prevention and Research, School of Nursing, received a Lifetime Achievement Award Feb. 17 from the Texas Research Society on Alcoholism. Presented at the annual meeting of the society in College Station, the award was for “outstanding contributions to education in the field of addictions.”

S. Ward Casscells, M.D., vice president for biotechnology, UT Health Science Center (HSC), and the John Edward Tyson Distinguished Professor in Cardiology, spoke March 7 in the Houston Club Lyceum Distinguished Speaker Series on “Avian Influenza and ARS: Global Challenges for Health Diplomacy, What It Means for You Personally and for Your Workforce – The Need to Plan Now.”
Thomas R. Cole, Ph.D., director of the John P. McGovern, M.D., Center for Health, Humanities, and the Human Spirit, MS, and the Beth Toby Grossman Professor in Spirituality and Healing, participated in a panel discussion in February about the Main Street Theater’s production of “Wondergirl.” What begins as a straightforward medical drama evolves into an examination of the arena where medical ethics, rapid technological advances and human emotions struggle to find common ground.
James T.Willerson, M.D., president, UT Health Science Center, was featured speaker at the Feb. 14 BioHouston Breakfast Forum. He discussed “Biotechnology Advances the Treatment of Heart Diseases,” dealing with his work with adult stem cells and damaged heart tissue.
