Features Keynote on Simulation
A physician who makes "learning-by-doing" easier for health professional students will be keynote speaker Tuesday, May 10, at the Sixth Annual Advances in Teaching and Learning Regional Conference.
Faculty, staff, residents, fellows and students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston are invited to attend the conference 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the School of Nursing and Student Community Center. Presentation of awards will follow at a wine and cheese reception.
Grace Huang, M.D., will discuss simulation in health science education, including the "virtual patients" produced at the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Huang is director of educational technology and the Lunder Clinical Educator in Multimedia Programs at the institute.
As a consultant to the Association of American Medical Colleges, she is working to help all medical schools benefit from these learning tools. She also has designed Web-based modules and has created interactive animations for handheld computers to instruct medical students.
At the conference, Texas Medical Center area educators will cover a variety of topics in podium and poster presentations.
The conference is sponsored by the health science center's School of Health Information Sciences, Office of Academic Affairs, Lone Star Legacy Society and School of Nursing. Chaired by Cynthia Phelps, Ph.D., assistant professor of health informatics, the conference planning committee represents a university-wide effort.
