UT Health Science Center’s Six Schools
Announce Commencements
Distinguished speakers will address faculty, staff, students and guests when the six professional schools of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston hold their 2005 graduation ceremonies. Information for each commencement is below:
School of Health Information Sciences
Carolyn Clancy, M.D., director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be the featured speaker at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in University Center Tower, Suite 1505C. Created in 1989, AHRQ uses 80 percent of its budget to support research to improve the quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness of health care for all Americans.
School of Public Health
The commencement speaker is Darwin R. Labarthe, M.D., Ph.D., associate director for Cardiovascular Health Policy and Research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 6, in the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 W. Holcombe. Labarthe is a former epidemiology professor at the UT School of Public Health.
School of Nursing
The principal speaker will be Kathleen Gainor Andreoli, D.S.N., dean of the College of Nursing and vice president for academic affairs at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Graduation will be at 7 p.m. Friday, May 6, in the George R. Brown Convention Center (Section C, General Assembly Hall, third floor). Prior to arriving at Rush, Andreoli was vice president for educational services, interprofessional education and international programs at the UT Health Science Center at Houston.
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
At 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, in the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, the principal commencement speaker will be Rita Colwell, Ph.D., chairman of Canon US Life Sciences Inc. and Distinguished University Professor at The University of Maryland at College Park and the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. She was director of the National Science Foundation, 1998-2004.
Dental Branch
Jerry Long, D.D.S., president of the UT Dental Branch Alumni Association, will be the principal speaker as special activities and guests commemorate the school's 100 years of developing dental professionals in Texas. Mark G. Yudof, LL.B., chancellor of the UT System, also is scheduled to make remarks at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas Ave.
Medical School
Catherine D. DeAngelis, M.D., editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association and editor-inchief of Scientific Publications and Multimedia Applications, will be the commencement speaker at10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, in the George R. Brown Convention Center, General Assembly Hall. DeAngelis is an internationally respected author, researcher, clinician, administrator and educator, with a background in pediatrics, public health and medical business management. She is an expert in conflict-ofinterest and the public trust.
