Conference Highlights Frontiers of Medicine
in Genomic Era
Alan Leshner, chief executive editor of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and executive editor of Science magazine, will be opening speaker for the Fifth Annual De Lange Conference March 7-9 at Rice University.
The conference on "Frontiers of Medicine: Society, Pharmacology and Membrane Biology in the Genomic Era" will have a mixture of renowned scientists and physicians plus rising stars of the next generation.
Among the speakers are three Nobel Laureates including The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston's Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., holder of the John S. Dunn Sr. Distinguished Chair in Physiology and Medicine, director of the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases, and chairman of the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at the UT Medical School at Houston.
Conference sponsors are Rice University and the Gulf Coast Consortium for Membrane Biology, which includes the UT Health Science Center, with the support of UK Science and Technology, British Consulate-General Houston.
Conference co-chairs are John Spudich, Ph.D., holder of the health science center's Robert A. Welch Distinguished Chair in Chemistry, professor and director of the Center for Membrane Biology at the Medical School, and Michael Gustin, Ph.D., associate professor at Rice University.
The March 7 program is aimed at members of the general public and scientists interested in the implications and challenges facing society as a result of fastpaced advances in biomedical science in the genomic era. Topics include: the practice of medicine, the training of bio-scientists and clinicians, and the science of pharmacology.
The program on March 8 and 9 focuses on cuttingedge advances in biomembrane research, including the structure and function of membrane proteins and lipids, which fuel biomedical technology.
Thanks to the De Lange Endowment, there is no cost associated with general conference registration.
