Running to Victory

Maximo Mendoza crosses the finish line April 2 as the overall winner of the 27th Annual Eeyore's 5K Run with a time of 16 minutes and 59 seconds. Mendoza, 16, is a 10th-grade honor roll student at Pearland High School and a member of the school's varsity cross country/track team. He is the son of Patsy Sanchez of the Governmental Affairs Office at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Cosponsored by the Texas Exes Houston Chapter and the health science center, the run had more than 400 registered runners.

Joy Schmitz, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the UT Medical School at Houston, places second in her age group at Eeyore's Fun Run. Proceeds from the event provide scholarships for Houston-area students attending campuses of the UT System.
