Health of Humans and Animals Linked

It’s not enough any more for veterinarians to take care of animals. They also have to be alert to the potential for diseases to be transmitted from animals to humans. A distinguished parasitologist/microbiologist from the United Kingdom and the Army’s top veterinarian addressed expanded responsibilities during speeches April 6 in two James H. Steele Lectures at The University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston. Both series were established to recognize the contributions of Emeritus Professor James H. Steele, D.V.M., to the field of infectious and zoonotic diseases. From left, Herbert DuPont, M.D., director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, and Steele visit with Lord Lawson Soulsby, D.V.S.M., Ph.D., president of the Royal Institute of Public Health and the Royal Sanitary Institute.
