Awards and Honors
Ananth Annapragada, Ph.D., associate professor, School of Health Information Sciences, is one of 86 of the nation's top nanotechnology researchers selected to attend the Nov. 19-21 National Academies Keck Futures Initiative Designing Nanostructures conference in Irvine, Calif. Researchers who attended the conference are eligible to compete for $1 million in "seed" grants to begin collaborative research inspired by ideas and relationships developed during the conference.
Barry D. Kahan, Ph.D., M.D., professor and director, Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation, Medical School (MS), was elected councilor of The Transplantation Society during the 20th International Congress Sept. 5-10 in Vienna, Austria. He received a Doctoris Honoris Causa from Semmelweis University Nov. 6 in Budapest, Hungary.
Carlos Moreno, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine, Medical School, and his wife, Rosanna Gomez Moreno, were recognized Sept. 24 for outstanding contributions to the community at the 2004 Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon, hosted by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County. Moreno holds the C. Frank Webber Chair in Family Medicine and is vice president for community and educational outreach, Health Science Center.
Presentations
John R. Klein, Ph.D., professor of diagnostic sciences, Dental Branch, gave two invited seminars: Oct. 12 on "T Cell Activation in the Intestinal Mucosa" at the Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans and Nov. 17 on "Immune- Endocrine Interactions of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Thyroid Axis: The Role of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone" at the Genzyme Corporation in Framingham, Mass.
James Steele, D.V.M., emeritus professor, SPH, was invited to speak at the Pan American Veterinary Science Congress Oct. 28- Nov. 2 in Buenos Aires. Because he was unable to attend in person, he sent a video of his speech on "Veterinary Public Health Leadership and New Zoonoses Problems."
Publications
Lynna Littleton, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing for target populations, and Joan Engebretson, Dr.P.H., professor of nursing for target populations, School of Nursing, now have their second book, Maternity Nursing Care, published in October by Thomson Delmar Learning.
