Paula Knudson, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston's special advisor for research involving human subjects, welcomes Nhlanhla Mkhize, Ph.D., who spoke Nov. 1 at the UT Medical School at Houston. Mkhize is a member of the Research Ethics Committee of the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He is co-director of the Southern African Research Ethics Training Initiative and a consultant to the HIV-AIDS Vaccines Ethics Group. He discussed "Indigenous Concepts of Personhood, Health and Illness: Implications for IRBs." At the health science center, the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects serves as the IRB, or institutional review board charged with monitoring human subject research.
