More than 160 golfers gathered Oct. 31 at the Timber Creek Golf Course in Friendswood to raise funds and swing clubs for deserving medical, dental, nursing, public health, biomedical sciences and health information sciences students.
“The UT Scholarship Golf Classic was a great success with many teams and individuals enjoying themselves,” said tournament chair Richard Andrassy, M.D., executive vice president for clinical affairs and holder of the Denton A. Cooley, M.D., Chair in Surgery.
Andrassy expressed “a tremendous thanks” to his surprise guest and golf partner, country music entertainer Tracy Byrd and Houston radio station KILT’s Jeff Garrison for playing in his group and supporting the fund-raising efforts.
The tournament’s platinum sponsor, A-dec, (A Dental Equipment Company) donated $10,000 to underwrite the tournament and for student scholarships. Company representative Charles Cook flew in from the corporate offices near Portland, Ore., to enjoy a breezy day on the Gulf Coast.
Team members gathered in the club house at the end of the day to enjoy an awards ceremony and the announcement of silent auction winners. The first place prize went to the diamond sponsor Memorial Hermann Healthcare System team of Steve Allen, M.D.; Brad Allen, M.D.; Kevin Smith, M.D.; and John Hairston, M.D., with a low score of 59.
Andrassy thanked James “Red” Duke, M.D., the John B. Holmes Professor in the Clinical Sciences, who was present for the awards despite being in the operating room all night; tournament co-chair David Mercer, M.D., professor of surgery; and the tournament planning committee, players and sponsors who contributed to the success of the event.
