Research Day Highlights New Faculty, Students

“Diverse and exciting research is conducted daily in the UT Health Science Center at Houston,” says Peter Davies, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president for Research. “And the 10th annual Research Day, which this year will showcase the research of more than 150 new faculty and students, is the only institution-wide event where everyone has an opportunity to network with health science center scientists from across the university.”

Research Day: New Faculty and Student Research will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19, at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 W. Holcombe Blvd., in the Texas Medical Center. Students, faculty, staff, residents and fellows are invited to attend.

Students and nominated faculty must register and submit abstracts online by 5 p.m., Sept. 15, at http://research.uth.tmc.edu/researchforum/.

Deans from all six health science center schools and Irma Gigli, M.D., deputy director of the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases, have nominated new faculty within the first five years of their appointment to be invited to submit abstracts.

Ten of those faculty members will be selected to give platform presentations in the morning, and 20 will be selected to present posters in the afternoon.

More than 140 student participants, selected by the individual schools, also will present posters. Guidelines for student participation will be e-mailed to students by their respective schools prior to the event.

Research Day also will highlight poster presentations by 25 undergraduate students selected by the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston and from winners of the Houstonarea High School Science and Engineering Fair.

Research Day is coordinated by the Office of Research. For information contact Melissa Proll,Ph.D. director of research education, integrity and compliance, (713) 500-3082, or research@uth.tmc.edu.
