Holiday BookFair Offers Chance
to Double Your Gift-Giving
There’s a special place in John Healy’s heart for books. Not just because he’s a student. But also because he received a scholarship as a result of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Holiday BookFair at Barnes & Noble Booksellers last year.

The book fair this year is again an opportunity to give a gift twice. Simply purchase your holiday gifts of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, calendars or journals at the Barnes & Noble store at 3003 W. Holcombe between Dec. 1 and 4, and up to 25 percent of your purchase price will benefit student scholarships at the health science center. The store is open 9 a.m.-11 p.m.
Using the health science center gift voucher at that location during the book fair will allow shoppers to designate a particular school, the University Classifed Staff Council’s scholarship program, or the university’s general scholarship fund.
“This is an opportunity to buy a gift for a family member or friend, and also help prepare the next generation of health care professionals,” said C. Gwin Morris, Ph.D., vice president for public affairs. “In essence, it is a way to double our gift-giving during the holiday season.”
John Healy, a second-year medical student, expressed gratitude for the generosity of others. “It is a very fright-ening thing to see the financial aid report for school each year and to realize how much debt one must go into in order to receive a medical education,” Healy said. “Each year I step back and find myself questioning my ability to succeed because of the risk of assuming such a debt.
“I have been so grateful to receive the assistance of the scholarship because, in a sense, it is symbolic that others also believe that I can succeed and are willing to help in the achievement of that goal,” he said. “It provides even more incentive (not that there isn’t a lot already) to do the best I can, so that one day I can in turn help the community. For the emotional strength, as well as the purely financial support that those involved in the book fair provide, I am forever grateful.”
The Barnes & Noble store has many items to choose from, but gift cards and café consumables will not count toward book fair totals.
