Programs in Nursing School Rate High

The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston (SON) Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Program’s full accreditation status has been continued by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.

The board commended the program for the 94.4 percent pass rate for SON graduates in the 2003 National Council Licensure Examination-RN. The accreditation decision was based on the pass rate and on the board’s staff review of the school’s 2003 annual report.

“Even though we’d like to have our pass rate even higher, we are proud that we exceed the state and national averages,” said SON Dean Patricia L. Starck, D.S.N., the John P. McGovern, M.D., Distinguished Professor in Nursing. “This success is attributable to our excellent faculty and our clinical partners in our health care community.”

Gerontological Nursing

The 2003 graduating class of gerontological nurse practitioners (GNP) from the School of Nursing has achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the American Nurses Credentialing Center GNP certification exam. In addition, each of the eight students is gainfully employed, and 65 percent of them are working in geriatric practices.

“We are obviously proud of this exceptional group of students,” said Mary Pat Rapp, GNP and assistant professor for clinical nursing.
