Commencements and Speakers Set for All Six Schools

 

Distinguished speakers will address faculty, staff, students and guests when the six professional schools of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston hold their 2004 graduation ceremonies. Information for each commencement event follows.

UT School of Health Information Sciences at Houston: 4 p.m., Thursday, May 6, University Center Tower, 7000 Fannin, Suite 1505C. Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be the featured speaker. The AHRQ is the lead agency responsible for supporting research to improve the quality of health care, reduce its cost, improve patient safety, decrease medical errors and broaden access to essential services.

UT School of Public Health at Houston: 2 p.m., Friday, May 7, Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 West Holcombe. Commencement speaker is David R. Smith, M.D., chancellor of the Texas Tech University System and former commissioner of the Texas Department of Health.

UT School of Nursing at Houston: 7 p.m., Friday, May 7, George R. Brown Convention Center (Section C, General Assembly Hall, 3rd floor). Principal speaker will be Juanita Romans, senior vice president and chief executive officer of Memorial Hermann Hospital.

UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston: 10 a.m., Saturday, May 8, Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 West Holcombe. Principal speaker will be Teresa A. Sullivan, Ph.D., executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the UT System, formerly dean of the Graduate School at UT Austin. Sullivan is a renowned scholar in sociology, economics and law.

UT Dental Branch at Houston: 7 p.m., Friday, May 28, Cullen Performance Hall, University of Houston Central Campus. Herbert L.Wade Jr., D.D.S., the incoming president of the Texas Dental Association, will speak.

UT Medical School at Houston: 1 p.m., Sunday, May 30, Assembly Hall, George R. Brown Convention Center. Principal speaker will be Andrew von Eschenbach, M.D., director of the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. He is a nationally recognized urologic surgeon who formerly directed the Genitourinary Cancer Center and the Prostate Cancer Research Program at the UT
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
