Back Fore More – 12th Annual Scholarship Golf Classic
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston is headed back to Redstone Golf Club Sept. 27 for the 12th Annual Health Science Center Scholarship Golf Classic.
Redstone is home to the 2004 Shell Houston Open and was the preferred choice by all committee members because of the record success of last year’s event.
To date the tournament has awarded more than 170 scholarships totaling more than $285,000. Last year’s event netted $42,000 to add to the scholarship fund. The 2003 tournament helped to fund two scholarships per school, as well as increasing the scholarship endowment for future recipients.
The first groups of 2004 golfers will tee off at 9:30 a.m. The tournament will again be a shotgun start and in a shamble format. Players are encouraged to arrive early to take advantage of the early bird breakfast and to get loosened up on the practice range with free range balls.
Immediately following the tournament, an old fashioned cook-out will be held on site, along with an awards ceremony, door prizes and a silent auction. The auction will include dinners at some of Houston’s finest restaurants as well as autographed memorabilia from various athletes.
Tournament sponsorships range from $15,000 for a presenting sponsor to $500 for a hole/cart sponsor. Individual entry fees are $250 per person or $1,000 for a foursome. Health science center employees receive a special price of $225 per person or $900 for a foursome.
Participants in this annual tournament help make a difference in the lives of future health professionals.
“I am grateful and proud to be one of the few recipients of this award,” said Austin Hill, a Medical School student and 2003 recipient of a Golf Classic Scholarship. “I love the game of golf and think it is one of the most charitable sports in the country. Thank you for putting together such a great golf tournament benefiting students. I hope the tradition is still going strong when I am a working professional and able to contribute to others.”
