Combine a beautiful day, a new, exciting golf course, and 124 golfers who played knowing their dollars would fund scholarships for students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. The result was the successful 11th Annual Health Science Center Scholarship Golf Classic, held Oct. 1 at Redstone Golf Club.

“We can all look at this year’s tournament with pride,” said Rick Harsch, tournament chairman, who is vice president for commercial real estate at SouthTrust Bank. “When all expenses are paid, we will net $42,000 to go toward scholarships to be shared by the six schools.” This total was due in large part to tournament sponsors: Truman C. Edminster with Edminster, Hinshaw, Russ and Assoc. Inc, a $5,000 sponsor; and JPMorgan Chase, FKP Architects, and A&E Graphics, $2,500 sponsors.

Sponsors who donated $1,750 were AIG, Compass Bank, LoanStar Educational Loans, P&W Architects, Texas Orthopedic Hospital, UT Health Science Center Anesthesiologist Jeffrey Katz, M.D., Stewart Title Co., Tellepson Construction, Vaughn Construction, and UT Medical School at Houston Department of Surgery.

Harsch acknowledged, as well, the tournament underwriters, L. Maximilian Buja, M.D., executive vice president for academic affairs; Peter Davies, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president for research; the Houston Texas Exes; the Office of Development/Lone Star Legacy Society; the Office of Public Affairs; the UT School of Public Health at Houston; and the UT Medical School at Houston.

The Department of Surgery team took home the first place (gross) trophy. Members were Richard Andrassy, M.D.; David Mercer, M.D.; John Teichgraber, M.D.; and John Hairston, M.D. The winning first place team (net) was made up of Martin McGonagle, Andy Bandurski, Blake Ross, and Doug Jones, representing GE Medical Systems.

A silent auction at the conclusion of play raised almost $3,000, with sports-related items such as a Miami Dolphins jersey signed by Ricky Williams that sold for $325.
