"We can all look to the golf classic with pride," said tournament chair Rick Harsch, who is senior vice president/ district manager of KeyBank Real Estate Capital.

The increase in scholarship funding over last year's tournament was in part due to generous contributions made by $5,000 sponsors Memorial Herman Healthcare System and the Evelyn Griffith Foundation, and by $2,500 sponsors E&G Engineers & Consultants Inc., Per-Se Technologies, Andrews & Kurth LLP, AIG, and Dynamic Industries.

The Sept. 27 tournament at Redstone Golf Club brought out a larger number of participants this year, with 160 golfers, including PGA professional Steve Elkington.

"The response to having Steve Elkington on hand was great. Steve was able to hang out all day during the tournament and hit a few balls with the participating players," said tournament co-chair Richard Andrassy, M.D., the health science center's executive vice president for clinical affairs and holder of the Denton A. Cooley, M.D., Chair in Surgery.

The Memorial Hermann Healthcare System team took home the first place (gross) trophy. Members were A.T. Blackshear, board chair; David Graham, board member; Jerry Mueck, vice president; and Dan Wolterman, president and chief executive officer.

The winning first place (net) trophy went to the LBJ Hospital Surgery Team, made up of David Mercer, M.D., professor, chief of surgery at LBJ Hospital and director of the Division of General Surgery in the UT Medical School at Houston; Earnest Gonzalez, M.D., clinical research fellow; James Suliburk, M.D., clinical research resident; and Robert Hay, a clinical consultant.

Tournament preparations are under way for 2005, according to Andrassy, who will serve as chair.

The 2004 golf tournament was coordinated by Rose Mary Betancourt-Trevino and Dustin Childers in the Office of Public Affairs.
