Willerson
and 18 Faculty Members
Named as America’s ‘Top Doctors’
A popular consumer guide to the nation’s most outstanding
physicians has chosen 18 full-time faculty
members from The University of Texas Medical School
at Houston, as well as the institution’s president.
America’s Top Doctors, available from Castle
Connolly Ltd., for $29.95 (ISBN 1-883769-36-1),
has selected UT Medical School physicians in 14 of
17 board-certified medical specialties and their
numerous subspecialties recognized by the American
Board of Medical Specialties. The 2003 edition of
America’s Top Doctors includes less than 1 percent
of
U.S. physicians.
James T. Willerson, M.D., president of the UT
Health Science Center at Houston, is recognized
both nationally and internationally as one of the
nation’s top cardiologists. His most recently
announced research project examines the possible
regeneration of damaged heart tissue by using the
patient’s own stem cells to trigger healing.
Eighteen full-time UT Medical School faculty
members are listed in America’s Top Doctors. These exceptional
physicians include: James A. Ferrendelli,
M.D., James C. Grotta, M.D., and Jerry
S. Wolinsky, M.D., for neurology; Susan E.
Denson,
M.D., and Jon E. Tyson, M.D., for neonatal-perinatal
medicine; Richard W. Smalling, M.D., Ph.D.,
for interventional cardiology; Frank C. Arnett Jr.,
M.D., and Maureen Mayes, M.D., for rheumatology; Barry D. Kahan,
M.D., Ph.D., for surgery; and Hazim J. Safi, M.D., for thoracic
surgery.
America’s Top Doctors also lists K.
Lance Gould, M.D.,
for cardiology; Victor R. Lavis, M.D., for endocrinology;
Guy L. Clifton, M.D., for neurological
surgery; Malcolm L. Mazow, M.D., for ophthalmology;
William H. Donovan, M.D., for physical
medicine and rehabilitation; Madeleine Duvic,
M.D., for dermatology; Hope Northrup, M.D., for
clinical genetics; and Deborah Shure, M.D., for pulmonary
disease.
In addition, America’s Top Doctor’s recognized
O.
H. Frazier, M.D., UT Medical School professor of
surgery, who also holds an appointment with the Texas Heart
Institute at St. Luke’s Hospital, and
Denton A. Cooley, M.D., president, surgeon-inchief and founder of the Texas Heart Institute, as well
as a clinical professor at UT Medical School.
Only physicians nominated and reviewed by their
medical peers are eligible for recognition America’s
Top Doctors. Evaluators based their assessment of these “top docs” on the individual’s
rigorous
medical training, extensive clinical knowledge and
experience, and further training in some specialties.
These outstanding physicians not only meet these
stringent general criteria, but also possess unique
skills in their field.
“We are very proud of the many outstanding
doctors at UT,” Willerson said. “Those named
in this
list are part of an even broader group at our institution
who are committed to excellence above all in
everything they do here.”
