offer Teacher Summer Science Institute
| WHAT: | Forty-four middle and high school teachers from across Texas have been selected to participate in The University of Texas School of Public Health’s interactive HEADS UP Teacher Summer Science Institute (TSSI). Participating teachers will learn about neurological conditions that affect students and how to recognize the signs, the genetics of obesity and the immune system and infectious diseases. The UT School of Public Health is part of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. | |
| WHEN: | 8 a.m. – 4:45 p.m., June 24-26, 2009. Guest speakers include Pedro Mancias, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and neurology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston; and Leanne Field, Ph.D., distinguished senior lecturer at the School of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. |

| WHO: | HEADS UP (Health Education And Discovering Science while Unlocking Potential) is a multimedia science program designed for middle and high school students. The program is supported by a Science Education Partnership Award from the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health and is managed by the UT School of Public Health’s Michael & Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living. Topics in the program include genetics, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, nutrition, physical activity, the nervous system, and the immune system and infectious diseases. | |

| WHY: | The three-day professional development opportunity gives K-12 science teachers the information, resources and strategies to teach students about health and science topics. The program provides opportunities to develop partnerships with biomedical scientists and to learn about the UT Health Science Center at Houston and other state resources. | |
