UT School of Public Health addresses the
future of academic medicine

Local institution leaders speak out on what to keep and what to change

 

HOUSTON – (April 22, 2009) – The University of Texas School of Public Health’s George McMillan Fleming Center for Healthcare Management will host its fourth moderated panel discussion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 30 in the auditorium of the Reuel A. Stallones Building, 1200 Herman Pressler. The event is jointly sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives, Southeast Texas Chapter.

City of Houston Mayor Bill White is scheduled to provide opening remarks at the panel discussion.

Arthur Garson, Jr., M.D., M.P.H., executive vice president and provost of the University of Virginia., will moderate the panel discussion, “The Future of Academic Medicine: What do we keep? What should we change?” The panel of distinguished speakers will include Larry R. Kaiser, M.D., president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston; John Mendelsohn, M.D., president of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; William T. Butler, interim president of Baylor College of Medicine; and H. Dirk Sostman, M.D., chief academic officer and chief medical officer at The Methodist Hospital System. Leon J. Leach, executive vice president of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center will also participate.

Established in April 2008, the Fleming Center supports the development of a new healthcare management major within the school’s MPH degree program. This new MPH major has received approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Council on Education for Public Health. The first class of students will begin this fall.

The degree program is designed to provide students with practical tools and knowledge for managing healthcare institutions in the broader context of health policy and the well-being of communities.

The center is named in honor of George McMillan Fleming, a past president of the Texas Hospital Association and healthcare leader at numerous hospitals in the state, including The Methodist Hospital.
