Hagberg Appointed Chair of Anesthesiology
at UT Medical School at Houston
HOUSTON—(July 11, 2008)—Carin A. Hagberg, M.D., professor of anesthesiology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, has been appointed chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. She has served as the interim department chair since January.

“Dr. Hagberg has shown outstanding leadership during this period of transition for the Department of Anesthesiology, and I am so pleased that she will serve as department chair. My hope is that she will continue to grow and strengthen this important department,” said Giuseppe Colasurdo, M.D., dean of the UT Medical School at Houston.
As interim chair, Hagberg has already recruited new faculty members and has re-established the department’s chronic pain management service. Additionally, she has started an alumni association.
The Benjamin M. Rigor UT Department of Anesthesiology Alumni Association will help support the Joseph C. Gabel, M.D., Lecture Series and one-on-one clinical training of residents. It also will sponsor residents to attend national and international lectures and seminars through financial support from alumni.

My goal is to lead a department that provides the highest quality clinical care and promotes leading research and outstanding teaching, as well as contributes significantly to the local, national and international communities,” said Hagberg.

Johnson General Hospital.
Hagberg received her medical degree from the UT Medical School at Houston in 1988. She completed her residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, focusing on cardiovascular anesthesia and neuroanesthesia, serving as chief resident her last year. Hagberg joined the UT Medical School faculty in 1992.
Hagberg is an internationally recognized expert in the field of airway management; having written two books and multiple book chapters on this subject.
She will continue to see patients and do clinical research in the area of difficult airway management.
